Beavertown to honor ‘Monkee’ Davy Jones with statue

BEAVERTOWN – The Snyder County community where Davy Jones spent summers for 22 years before his Feb. 29, 2012, death in Florida plans to erect a lifesize statue of the former Monkee.

The statute is to be unveiled at noon June 15 in Beavertown near the Snyder County horse farm the entertainer spent summers. A full day of activities is planned.

A bed race, scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Beaver Springs Dragway, will be preceded by a parade of beds. Participants will be competing for the Davy Jones Memorial Trophy and other prizes. Davy Jones’ daughters may be in attendance if they can arrange their schedules, Beavertown Mayor William Wagner said.

The image of Jones riding on a bed with the Monkees during the opening montage of the television show sparked the idea for a bed race, said Cher Harpster, executive director of the Middlecreek Area Community Center, that is sponsoring the event as a fundraiser.

Race teams must construct their own bed on wheels and must raise a minimum of $100 to enter by June 3. Teams will consist of five individuals, all of whom must be 16 or older.
