Sad day…

TMZ is reporting that Jones, who churned out breezy pop hits such as “Last Train to Clarksville” and “I’m a  Believer” with the TV-generated rock band the Monkees in the 1960s  has died of a heart attack in Martin County, Florida. He was 66.

The Monkees story began in the fall of 1965, when producers Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider, whose Raybert Productions had a deal with Columbia Pictures and its TV branch Screen Gems, came up with an idea for a TV series about a rock group. The idea was inspired by the success of director Richard Lester’s film successes with the Beatles on A Hard Day’s Night and Help!

The Monkees, which also included Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork and Micky Dolenz, recorded hits that were bolstered by  a formidable array of talent including songwriters Neil Diamond, Carole King, Gerry Goffin and David Gates and studio musicians such as Glen Campbell, Elvis Presley guitarist James Burton and Wrecking Crew drummer Hal Blaine.

Jones is survived by his wife Jessica and 4 daughters from previous marriages. He had been booked to perform May 18-20 at Epcot’s Flower Power concert series at Walt Disney World.
