DURHAM – An Evening with The Monkees: The 45th Anniversary Tour will stop at the Durham Performing Arts Center Sept. 1.
The tour marks the 45th anniversary of the NBC television show that launched the career of the band. Original members Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork will perform during the tour. Michael Nesmith will not be on the tour.
Jones, Dolenz and Tork will perform the band’s well known hits, among them “I’m a Believer,” “Last Train to Clarksville,” “Daydream Believer,” “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone,” and “Valleri.”
For the first time, the band also will songs from their classic albums and rarely heard selections from their cult classic movie, “Head.” Songs and videos will be broadcast throughout the venue to provide a soundtrack before and after the main show, featuring Monkees rarities as well as covers by past and present artists they’ve influenced over their long career.
Formed in Los Angeles in 1966, The Monkees debuted with their television series hit single “Last Train to Clarksville.” The show was a success over its two-season run, winning two Emmy Awards. Rock critics of the time chastised them as being a “made up” band, but their albums “Headquarters” and “Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.” would go on to achieve critical acclaim and respect.
Since their heyday, all four members have pursued solo music and acting careers. Nesmith, who for a brief time in the 1990s joined a reunion tour but has generally steered clear of Monkees reunions, has been a video and film producer, in addition to his solo music career. Tork, Dolenz and Jones have been part of several Monkees reunion tours over the decades.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, the band’s original members have regrouped for albums of new material as well as anniversary tours and TV specials.
